Andros, Governor (-)

In 1686, Sir Edmund Andros (1637-1714) was appointed royal governor of the Dominion of New England by Charles II.  His autocratic rule antagonized the citizens.  With the overthrow of James II in England during the Glorious Revolution of 1689, the citizens of Boston imprisoned Andros and some of his officials.  He was returned to England in July but formal charges were never pressed.  After this, most of the colonies received separate charters.
