Dore, Gustave

(Paul) Gustave Dore (1833-1883), the artist/illustrator, mentioned in "Pickman's Model" along with Sidney Sime and Angarola of Chicago. Dore managed, in five decades, to illustrate proactically every known great work of literature and revelled in a fascination with the bizarre. Lovecraft as a child after the death of his grandmother Rhoby Phillips poured over the family copy of Paradise Lost illustrated by Dore.
