Burleson in “Horror beneath Horror: Some Sources for ‘The Dunwich Horror’ and ‘The Whisperer in Darkness,’” Lovecraft Studies No. 2 (Spring 1980):5-15 points out that there is a Houghton’s Block in Athol, Massachusetts.
